Internships
United to End Genocide is changing the way the United States and the international community responds to the world's worst crime by empowering individuals and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide. Internships are available for undergraduate, graduate students or recent graduates who are available for at least 20 to 40 hours per week for duration of at least 2-3 months. Internship Program Areas include:
- STAND (student membership)
- Policy / Government Relations
- Campaign Advocacy and Outreach
- Conflict Risk Network
- Executive Team / Development
- Communications

Note: This is an unpaid internship. United to End Genocide does not offer an internship stipend. However, interns are reimbursed for their local transportation costs (excluding parking).
Academic Credit
Awarding academic credit for an internship is at the discretion of your high school, college, or university. However, we will assist you in providing appropriate information as your school requests. You should make all arrangements for earning credit prior to the commencement of your internship.
Internship Periods and Application Deadlines:

- Summer (May - August): April 10
- Fall: (September - December): August 1

STAND Internship
United to End Genocide seeks a highly motivated and independent college student or recent graduate to assist the staff with membership / STAND initiatives. Start and end dates can be negotiated.
The STAND Intern will assist in recruiting, servicing, and mobilizing United to End Genocide's membership to actively participate in its programs, as well as work with the STAND staff and Student Leadership Team to coordinate grassroots campaigns, develop materials and strategy, and manage logistics.
Major Responsibilities:
- Respond to member requests for information or help with events
- Assist United to End Genocide staff with event planning, campaigns, and material creation
- Contribute to overall functionality of office by answering phones and assisting with mailings and paperwork
- Developing materials and strategy for specific STAND campaigns
- Coordinating campaign logistics with the STAND Leadership Team
- Updating STAND's website
- Being the first response to student grassroots inquiries
Helpful Experience:
- An excellent verbal and written command of English
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable
- Excellent inter-personal communication skills
- Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential
- Interest and experience in human rights advocacy desirable, particularly related to genocide and Darfur
Policy / Government Relations Internship
The Policy department of United to End Genocide seeks a highly motivated and independent college student, recent graduate, graduate student to assist with research and policy initiatives. In the past, the Policy Intern has conducted research on a variety of issues, including treaties and emerging conflicts, attended congressional hearings and expert meetings, and assisted in the creation of a comprehensive risk assessment and conflict classification model that is to be used by the larger organization. The Intern will also synthesize news sources coming out of conflict areas around the world.
Major Responsibilities:
- Monitor news and synthesize media reports on areas of concern for the team.
- Blogging for United to End Genocide’s website
- Long-term research projects on various armed conflicts where civilians are being targeted on a disproportionately large scale
- Regular conflict monitoring and analysis to assist research associates with determining United to End Genocide’s involvement in emerging conflicts
- Attend meetings on behalf of the Policy Team
Helpful Experience:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences
- Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are essential, and experience using Microsoft Excel and editing web content is particularly helpful
- Interest and experience in human rights advocacy is desirable, particularly related to genocide, mass atrocities, the conflicts in Sudan, Syria and other areas of concern
- Relevant coursework is highly desirable
- Professional, well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable
- Arabic and / or French knowledge is a plus
Campaign Advocacy and Outreach Internship
United to End Genocide seeks a highly motivated and independent college student, recent graduate or graduate student to assist the staff of the Campaign Advocacy and Outreach department. In the past, the advocacy intern assisted in outreach to other organization about sign on letters, and collaboration opportunities. In addition, advocacy interns help staff assemble an organizational newsletter to update partner organizations on our work . They also work to maintain contact info databases of activists and organizations. Interns will also often assist with organizing events for the organization.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assisting with various aspects of United to End Genocide’s advocacy campaigns, including the development and distribution of materials
- Maintaining the contact information of both activists and partners; updating the United to End Genocide activist database
- Blogging on the website about United to End Genocide campaigns and events
- Assisting outreach staff in their work with partner organizations
- Researching issues, campaigns and events related to the organization's work
Helpful Experience:
- Interest and experience in human rights advocacy desirable, particularly related to genocide Sudan and Syria
- Ability to work independently
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Strong research and writing skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact professionally within a diverse community
Conflict Risk Network Internship:
United to End Genocide seeks a highly motivated and independent college student, recent graduate or graduate student to assist the staff of the Conflict Risk Network department. Interns must be able to work both independently and as a member of a team. Start and end dates can be negotiated. The Conflict Risk Network (CRN) is a network of institutional investors, financial service providers and related stakeholders whose combined efforts to mitigate conflict risk and increase responsible foreign investment aim to protect civilians as well as investment returns.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conducting in-depth research on corporations operating in United to End Genocide’s Areas of Concern, specifically Sudan and Burma; these primarily include corporations operating in the oil, mineral extraction, weapons, and information and communications technology sectors
- Assisting with outreach to strengthen and expand CRN's membership base
- Assisting in the compilation of the quarterly Company Report, published for the institutional investor community
- Monitoring news and conducting targeted research on United to End Genocide’s Areas of Concern as related to issues of corporate involvement and accountability
- Compiling and analyzing financial data and regulatory frameworks
- Updating project-related website and materials
- Communicating with allies and partners regarding CRN's work
Helpful Experience:
- Strong editing, writing and verbal communication skills
- Excellent online and offline research skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Internet applications, and a quick study with new software
- Aptitude with numbers
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable
- Interest in or knowledge of United to End Genocide Areas of Concern, human rights standards, business, finance and corporate accountability
Development Internship
UEG seeks a highly motivated and independent college student or recent graduate to assist the staff with development/fund raising initiatives and daily operations. Start and end dates can be negotiated. The Development Intern will work with staff to establish and implement fund raising systems related to both foundation and grassroots financial support. In addition this intern will assist the President and Executive Assistant with managing, calendars and travel.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conduct extensive research and identify prospective foundation, corporate and individual supporters through online and library sources
- Detail and maintain donor database (Sales Force)
- Process donations and record donor correspondence
- Seek out, implement, and manage development campaigns and advise grassroots fundraisers with material support
- Assist with development of donor communications and grant proposals
- Assist with metrics tracking and reporting on donor trends
- Responding to general inquiries about the organization and fund raising
- Other duties may be assigned throughout the internship depending on department needs and priorities.
Helpful Experience:
- An excellent verbal and written command of English
- Excellent online research skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including experience with Mail Merge tools and Excel formulas
- Experience with CRM data management systems is highly desirable
- Interest in human rights advocacy
- Previous experience in event planning or fundraising
- Well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable
Communications Internship
Communications interns work closely with the Organization's staff to fulfill both administrative and programmatic communications duties in our office in Washington DC.
Major Responsibilities:
- Tracking and monitoring media hits surrounding United to End Genocide's initiatives
- Building and maintaining media lists for outreach
- Drafting press releases/media advisories
- Assisting with communications projects as directed by the communications manager
Helpful Experience:
- Passion for ending mass atrocities throughout the world
- Background in communications, media relations, or public policy
- Ability to work independently
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Strong research and writing skills
